Blasting and painting halls for the Shah Deniz gas project
In the Caspian Sea region, Straaltechniek International set up three large blasting and painting halls for the treatment of offshore steel structures and subsea pipelines. The project was part of Shah Deniz Phase II, in 2015 the largest offshore project in the world.

The project
Straaltechniek International took part in the Shah Deniz Phase II project with one of its largest contracts ever. Since 2020, gas has flowed from two offshore platforms through a 3,500 kilometre long pipeline via Georgia, Turkey, Greece and Italy to the rest of Europe. Around 500 kilometres of it lies below sea level.
The solution: a Custom Coating Facility
Our part of the project is an advanced Custom Coating Facility, unique for the region. Here, subsea steel structures are cleaned, blasted, coated and given a special PU coating.
All compartments are equipped with heating systems and dehumidification equipment. This allows the climate in the halls to be controlled optimally, in line with the strictest offshore and environmental standards.
Dust-free blasting of subsea pipelines
We also developed an offshore application for the dust-free blasting of pipelines that are laid underwater. We did this together with a world-leading manufacturer of pipelines for the oil and gas industry, specialising in deep water.
The result
With this facility, the halls set a new standard for anti-corrosion treatment in the region.
