Dust-free blasting of pipelines on board a pipe-laying vessel
On board a 330 metre long pipe-laying vessel, pipelines are blasted before they go into the sea. Together with the client, Straaltechniek International developed a blasting installation that does this dust-free, on board and on the open sea.
Key facts
- Sector
- Offshore, oil and gas industry
- Client
- Global manufacturer of deep-water pipelines
- Location
- On board a 330 m pipe-laying vessel
- Installation
- Dust-free blasting units for pipe sections
- Supplied
- More than 30 units for several vessels
The challenge
The client is a leading, globally operating company that designs and manufactures pipelines for the oil and gas industry, specialising in deep water. Pipe sections are delivered by ship and processed on board the pipe-laying vessel: blasting, welding, blasting again and coating. The complete pipeline then leaves the stern of the vessel and is laid on the seabed.
Blasting on a ship calls for an installation that does not spread dust and keeps running reliably in a continuous production process on the open sea.
The solution
Working closely with the client’s project team, we developed an installation for the dust-free blasting of pipelines on board. The blasting units are a crucial step in the process: they prepare the steel for the coating that protects the pipeline against seawater.
The result
The quality has amply proven itself: we have now supplied this company with more than 30 units, spread across several vessels. In this way, our blasting solutions contribute to the global energy supply.
